How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Chess Tournament

Entering your first chess tournament is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel intimidating for both parents and kids. At Hayaa Chess Academy, we believe that tournament preparation is just as much about mindset as it is about chess tactics.

Here is a simple guide to help your child feel confident and ready for their big day on the board.

1. Focus on the Experience, Not the Results The goal of the first tournament is not to win first place; it is to understand how a tournament works. They will learn how to use a chess clock, how to write down their moves (notation), and how to play against unfamiliar opponents in a quiet hall. Celebrate the experience, regardless of the final score.

2. Practice with a Real Board and Clock Many kids play online, but over-the-board (OTB) tournaments feel very different. In the weeks leading up to the event, make sure they practice playing on a physical 2D board with tournament-style pieces. Introduce a chess clock so they get used to managing their time without panicking.

3. Master the “Touch-Move” Rule One of the most common mistakes beginners make is touching a piece and wanting to change their mind. Remind your child of the universal tournament rule: if you touch a piece, you must move it (if a legal move is possible). Teaching them to sit on their hands while thinking is a great trick!

4. Pack a “Tournament Survival Kit” Tournaments can be long and exhausting. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks (like nuts, bananas, or dark chocolate) to keep their energy and focus high between rounds. Heavy meals can make them feel sleepy at the board.

5. Manage Post-Game Emotions Chess is highly competitive, and tears after a loss are completely normal. Give them space to process their emotions. Later, remind them that every grandmaster has lost hundreds of games. The true value of a tournament is bringing the game scoresheets back to your coach to analyze and fix mistakes.
